It’s safe to say most Canadians have put a few coins into a gumball machine made by Newmarket, Ont.-based Beaver Machine Corp. The early models made by the family-owned business were recognized by their cherry red colour and etching of a beaver on the merchandise flap. Today, the machines, which are sold in more than 120 countries, can be purchased in just about any colour, size, or configuration and hold a variety of candy, toys and trinkets, Mary Teresa Bitti reports.

Now with the industry in decline worldwide, Bernie Schwarzli, Josef’s son, who took the helm at Beaver Machine in 1999, is preparing to take bulk vending into the digital age with Media Kiosks that are more marketing tools than dispensers. Three generations continue to work side by side at the company.”
